Create a series of monoprints in this two-day workshop and go home with a new portfolio. Develop your spontaneity and individuality. Bring some ideas to the workshop and see for yourself how far you can go in a matter of hours. Several interesting techniques will also be introduced. No previous experience is necessary.
 
Exploring Abstraction
Monday - Wednesday  | 10am-3pm | $285
Three-Day | April 3 – 5 
This is an intensive three-day workshop for students who wish to take their painting to the next level. We discuss different theories and ideas that are the core of abstract art. See how emotions and feelings that are hard to express in realistic terms can translate into abstract images. This workshop will include individual and group critiques.
 
A Day in Chelsea
Thursday | 11:30am-4:30pm | $150
One-Day | April 6
Let us meet in New York and spend a day walking around the Chelsea galleries with a professional art historian. We will look at a variety of approaches in contemporary art, analyze them and put them in perspective. In the course of the day we will treat ourselves to a fabulous lunch and return home feeling more aware of what is going on in the art world. We will meet at Grand Central at 10am.
 
Acrylic Painting Techniques

This one-day workshop is designed for artists working in acrylics and intended to help them master various applications of acrylic paint including dry brushing that feels like drawing with paint, washing that creates a thin veil of color, dabbing for adding texture, sponging and detailing. Participants will experiment with various techniques and create artworks using them.
 
Surrealist Drawing and Painting
Wednesday - Friday | 10am-2pm | $250
Three-Day | April 12 - 14
The Surrealist artists sought to channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power of the imagination. In this workshop we will explore the world of your dreams and your own artistic sensibility by focusing on elements of surprise, unexpected juxtaposition and non-sequitur We will start with Surrealist famous drawing exercises and then move on to create our own Surrealist paintings. Students can work in a medium of their choice.
 
Printing without a Press
Sunday | 10am–4pm | $150

One-Day | April 23
If you love spontaneity then this workshop is for you. It can be as simple as a found relief stamp or as complicated as a multi- colored monotype print. Most people do not have access to a printing press, and the techniques we are going to learn in this workshop will allow you to make prints anywhere. The materials will be provided.
 
Linoleum Prints in a Day
Sunday | 10am–4pm | $150
One-Day | May 7
Printing with the simple technique using linoleum cuts to create wonderful colorful prints that all levels of experience can enjoy. We will cover how to plan a design and transfer it to the linocut; how to cut the linocut; how to ink up the linocut and how to print it. We will use a printing press and will make prints by hand. This way you can easily replicate the process at home with minimal equipment.
 
Acrylic Painting Techniques

The Art of the Miniature
Sunday | 10am-3pm | $150
One-Day | June 4
Miniature art is a genre that focuses on art in much-smaller-than-usual size. In this workshop we will explore fine line drawing and painting of miniatures. Participants will create artwork on a very small scale, not larger than 2x2, and learn how it can completely change sensibility. Special exercises and techniques will be introduced that can be helpful in creating art while traveling. No prior experience necessary.

Exploring Collage & Mixed Media

One-Day | June 8 & 9
Mixed media is about freedom of expression and play. This workshop will look at different approaches to mixed media work, including painting, drawing, monotypes, and found or recycled materials. We will experiment with stencils, stamping, oil pastels, crayons, collage, decoupage, wet paint, image transfer, etc. Discover new ways and have fun. We can use both abstract and figurative imagery. The focus will be on developing a personal visual language. This workshop is suitable for both developed artists and beginners.

Throughout the centuries, women have been involved in making art as creators and innovators of new forms of artistic expression, sources of inspiration, or significant contributors as art historians and critics. Women have been and continue to be integral to the institution of art, but despite being engaged with the art world many women artists have found opposition in the traditional narrative of art history. They have faced challenges due to gender biases, from finding difficulty in training to selling their work and gaining recognition. Women have come forward as strong voices in art and art history today. We will explore important women artists and art historians throughout the time.– on women in 20th and 21st cc. No experience necessary.
 
Teaching Through Critique

Course will not meet on May 29
This course will help artists to perceive, interpret and make creative judgment about their work. We will discuss and analyze key elements: color, composition, technical and expressive qualities, subject matter and originality. Artists have an option of painting in class or just listening to critiques. This class can be beneficial for beginners as well as established artists.
 
Abstract Painting

This class is intended for anyone who wants to explore non-representational painting,
to strengthen and develop their own voice as a painter, and take some risks with their painting. We will experiment with color, proportion, shapes and texture. This course is also suitable for those who want to have more confidence in their own way of painting. No prior experience necessary, appropriate to beginners to advanced painters.
 
Monotype Printmaking

Participants will learn all the basic techniques for creating monotypes: multiple plates, chine colle’, stencils and viscosity. It will focus on practicing, experimenting and letting the process lead you to new innovations. Discover endless possibilities as you print more. Emphasis is given to helping each student develop a personal knowledge of the process.
 
Evening Printmaking

This course will introduce various printmaking techniques and participants with experiment with limitless possibilities of monotypes. We will learn about transfers, layering, stencils and other approaches to printmaking. No prior experience necessary.
 
Painting: Abstract

Learn how to gain understanding of the language of abstraction through paint. Learn about juxtaposition of colors and shapes. Discover a new non-representational way of viewing the world. Experiment with scale, proportion, materials and texture. Practice design and composition. Participate in specially designed drawing exercises to develop your own visual language.

Russian Art Tour
June 17 – 29

The Silvermine School of Art is offering a unique opportunity to travel to Russia with Natasha Karpinskaia faculty and Guild Artist member. Natasha, a Russian-born artist and art historian who grew up in Moscow will lead a group of artists through this magnificent city for six days. Visiting the Pushkin Museum, cathedrals in the Kremlin Complex, Tretyakov Gallery, Novodevichiy Monastery and Sergiev Posad outside of Moscow. Students will have an opportunity to paint the city landscape and visit a working artists print studio. Spend five days in St. Petersburg visiting State Hermitage, Isaac Cathedral, and Petergoff Place. Enjoy a walking tour of Vasilievsky Island and the Academy of Fine Arts. Wonderful dinners at exciting night spots and enjoy an evening concert at Moscow Conservatory and Ballet at Bolshoi Theatre. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy Russia, warm but not hot, White nights of St. Petersburg. This will be an incredible adventure for everyone – you don’t have to be an artist to participate in this trip.
